Love by Design

Really, Chloe had been warned by the new owners of a recently purchased home that the interior of the house was bad. She had no one but herself to blame for the migraine that was threatening to rattle against her temples as she took a breath to prepare herself for the horrors that awaited within. The couple that hired her was amicable enough, acknowledging that they had purchased a home that needed some serious decorative changes, and were willing to let her have total control of the redesign. They were even paying her extra, in addition to her rate, for all of her trouble. Their polite and gentle nature was a comfort as she opened the door, wincing at the visual assault on her senses. If Chloe didn't have a migraine before she had to deal with chatting with one of the previous designers of the house that didn't understand that neon colors were stuck in the eighties – for good reason – then she certainly had one beating an angry tempo against her skull after she entered the newly purchased home. Evidently, the previous owners- relatives of the purchasing couple, she was led to understand- had decided, with no one else's consultation, that neon pinks and greens were just so beautiful, that they simply couldn't resist painting and decorating their entire house in it; bright carpets, couches that hurt to look at, and walls that glowed radioactively from how brightly they were painted. The effect was stunning, especially given that none of the lights were turned on. She guessed that was a safety measure for anyone who stepped inside.

“Ah, pardon me, Mrs. Bradley,” she said as professionally as she could manage when it was literally too bright in the room to not hood her eyes with her lashes. “Is this the theme for every room?” Her smile was thin, pulled tight across weary cheekbones, she knew, but it was a necessary courtesy to the customer to be polite from the start, that she might set to work fixing this monstrosity sooner rather than later.

“All but the basement, sadly,” she replied, stepping delicately inside after her. Mr. Bradley came behind her, resting a hand on her hip, concern evident on his face.

“We're really sorry about all...err, this,” the man said nervously with a vague sweep of his arm. “This was her sister's home before she sold to us. She...never quite moved on from our teen years.” Chloe felt a touch of sympathy for the couple, knowing how these sorts of family relationships worked. No matter who it was, or what gender they were, if there was someone so stuck in the past that they felt the need to preserve it in their home, there was very little that any other person could do. 'Even if that thing you're trying to preserve is your marriage,' Chloe thought wryly, unbidden thoughts of her ex-husband bubbling under the surface that she promptly stamped down.

“Most people don't like coming over,” Mrs. Bradley said softly, wrapping her arms around herself.
